Spring is great time of year to step outside and enjoy the all the new life that the season brings. While it is a wonderful time of year, it always helps to be prepared for all that the change in season can bring. Tornadoes are no stranger to the great state of Oklahoma, where TVC Headquarters is based, but tornadoes occur across the United States. These monsters of wind can wreak havoc on your home and livelihood. If you might be affected by tornado season, read up on these safety tips:
Get Prepared and Practice
Before a chance of weather even hits, be prepared. Have a place of meeting for your family to gather safely. Practice a tornado drill annually, so everyone in your family knows where to go when necessary. Stock your storm shelter with supplies such as a radio and other safety equipment.
During the storm, go to an inner room of your home: a basement, storm shelter, small interior room, bathroom with no windows, or under stairs on lowest floor of your house. If you are outside, do anything you can to seek shelter, but if you are unable to, find low ground - away from both trees and cars. Lie facedown with your arms protecting your head. If you are in your home, bring soft pillows and a safety kit with you to your safe room.
After the Storm
Stay away from power lines which may have fallen. Avoid flooded areas - if there is a power line somewhere near- the water could be live with electricity. If your home is damaged, find a safe place to stay until it can be inspected for gas leaks and other dangers. Because of possible gas leaks - do not use matches of lighters until your home passes inspection.
