Dealing with hazardous road conditions

On the road, we’ve all found ourselves caught in the elements at some time or another. These reminders will help you battle the storms safely.

Truck Check-Ups
Before taking on anything from icy roads to rain storms, you should always thoroughly check your rig. For example, make sure your tires are properly inflated, your emergency kit is stocked, and all lights are working. In tough conditions, you must ensure that you are fully prepared.

Know the route
Inclement weather conditions is enough to deal with, let alone unsure of where you are headed. Storms can often impair your vision on the road - always have a plan and know the route, so you are on the look for the next exit when it is coming up. Something often gone forgotten, is bringing a physical map with you on your trip. If technology fails, it is vital you have a backup plan and only more so in tricky weather situations.

Stay Alert
Even the smallest mistakes can have serious implications when road conditions are poor. Be sure to get a full night’s sleep, keep your body and mind healthy by eating appropriately, and keep your mind alert by listening to podcasts or audio books (entertainment which requires processing information keeps your brain awake).

Always Err on the Side of Caution
Remember that the speed limit considers usual road conditions. During inclement weather going the speed limit may be very unsafe. Always leave extra space between you and the driver in front of you for greater reaction time. As a driver, always consider the possibilities and be prepared to come to a stop if necessary.
